Grown up surrounded by Kazakh nomads, Chen Shi-di became the director of song and dance troupe in Barköl county. During his fifty years of director’s work, Chen travelled to every village of Barköl, which is the most Kazakh-populated area in Eastern Xinjiang. Chen utilized his position to record tremendous recording pieces in the countryside. The collection covers numerous küys (traditional Kazakh tunes) and “Aytıs” sung by local akin poets. Besides these recording pieces, Chen documented traditional dances of Barköl Kazakhs by using photography, many of which were accompanied by dombıra and sıbızğı.
